The Grüner Veltliner – the leading variety in the Weinviertel wine growing region – is the great passion of Martin and Andrea
THE FLAVOUR
Over half of our vineyards are planted with Grüner Veltliner. This grape variety is best suited for medium to light, but not too dry soils – the Poysdorf soil has proven to be ideal for it.
The Kirchberg vineyard, for example with its loose loess soil and light gravel, has always been a high-quality and sought-after site and is also one of our top vineyards for Grüner Veltliner. But to every wine its soil. The Chardonnay for instance needs sufficient water retention capacity and a higher lime content, while Zweigelt prefers deep, nutrient-rich soils on south facing slopes.
Quality is made in the vineyard, but it is perfected in the cellar, where the aim is to bring all the characteristic features of a region into the bottle. What reads relatively simply, requires a great deal of feeling and experience on the part of the cellar master.
Variety-specific processing is a top priority for Martin. His credo: “Each grape has its own typical character which must be preserved in any case.”
